Marleen is an adviser and candidate civil-law notary for the Corporate/M&A practice group. She started as a candidate civil-law notary in 1998. Marleen specialises in company law (including notarial company law), focusing on various legal entities, such as foundations. She advises on governance and governance structures, especially in the semi-public sector (for example, healthcare institutions) and the cultural sector.
Marleen completed her doctoral research and obtained a Ph.D. from Utrecht University in April 2018. The title of her doctoral thesis is 'The role and position of the supervisory board in Dutch foundations' ('De rol en positie van de raad van toezicht van de Nederlandse stichting'). Marleen regularly publishes in various academic journals and co-authors book publications. She is a regular contributor to Kluwer's company law journal Rechtspraak Ondernemingsrecht: Praktisch bewerkt and the governance journal Goed Bestuur & Toezicht.
Besides her work at Houthoff, she is an associate professor and researcher at the University of Amsterdam. In addition, she is a member of the Standard Setting Committee for the Recognition of Charities (Commissie Normstelling Erkenning goede doelen).
